Several people here apparently think that it's not real.
So depression is this phenomenon with internal (emotional distress or changes in emotion processing) and external (behavioral) manifestations. People can't work, either feel extreme emotions or don't feel anything at all, don't have motivation, want to kill themselves, and so on.
It can be caused by many things:
- Social and environmental: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_defeat#In_humans
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sickness_behavior
- Many known and treatable medical, not psychiatric, illnesses: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Differential_diagnoses_of_depression
- To corroborate that, it can be reliably induced in many people by inflammation caused by treatments that induce immune system response, and subsides when treatments are stopped.
- Hormonal imbalances, this is an article by ob/gyn, not a psychiatrist. You should really read through it: http://www.studd.co.uk/dep_women.php
- Probably other reasons.
So, what's your thought on that? Can we arrive to some conclusion and names which will avoid whole denialism thing?
