Hi Reddit,
I am hoping someone can help me figure what to ask the doc to check for when I go in for an appointment about sudden hair loss.
A little about me:
I am 21, male, about 5'9", 150 lbs, white, don't smoke, and I have all of a sudden started losing my hair. I do not take any current medications other than a 5% minoxodil solution I have used for ~1.5 months (with no effect)
Within the past 2 months, I have noticed appreciable hair loss. This loss has occurred as noticeable thinning all over my scalp (and eyebrows) and I'm rather concerned. Having done some digging on my own, it doesn't appear to be male pattern baldness as I don't have family history of it, my hairline is not receding, and my hair loss is not constrained to the top of my head (its all over my head). However, I do have a family history of thyroid issues on both sides of my family, and am worried it could be tied to a hormonal imbalance/thyroid issue. I do not know what to do here, as I cannot pinpoint the cause. It has not been a patchy loss, but rather seems to come out everywhere (whole head/eyebrows) by the fist-full. I have wondered if it is some other cause like alopecia areata, a thyroid issue, or something such as low testosterone (potentially indicated by a noticeable loss in sex drive which has frustrated myself and my girlfriend). However, I am not sure how that could be pinpointed without a blood test/examination. Any help or recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you
