10 factors affecting your thyroid: change your strategy
I post this article for my patients and friends, as they requested. Hopefully it will answer some of their many ‘thyroid’ questions.
Thyroid hormones are the energy commanders of the whole human body, controlling how food is used by the cells and how glucose is converted into energy. Thyroid hormones are ‘energy-hormones’ and when their production is low we call it hypothyroidism, which means that the thyroid is under active. Diseases of the thyroid gland are commonly encountered, but they are often challenging to diagnose . In addition to all the clear cases of hypothyroidism, millions of Americans have unrecognized thyroid disorder, mostly in the form of sub-clinical hypothyroidism ( low functioning thyroid).
The two main hormones of the thyroid gland are thyroxine (also known as ‘T4’) and triiodothyronine (also known as ‘T3’) and together they have a powerful impact in every metabolic aspect of the human body. Free T3 is more active than the T4, and some writers even claim that T3 is the real active one.
Mild thyroid function is frequently not easy to diagnose nor understand. Check the “Thyroid” article in our main website (www.JupiterInstitute.com) and learn more. Then read the article “Adrenal Balance”, since adrenal disorders strongly affect thyroid function. Yes, if your adrenal gland is not working well (because of stress, chemicals, etc.) it can bring down your thyroid function EVEN if you take thyroid medication.
As I mentioned, low thyroid function is not always well defined, and on many occasions the diagnosis is not clear. The condition called ‘low-thyroid’, or sub-clinical hypothyroidism, is very common, and it explains symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, poor sleep, mild depression, etc. It frequently coexists with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Treatment may be needed and might be of great benefit. However, sub-clinical hypothyroidism frequently goes undiagnosed and untreated.
LOW FUNCTIONING THYROID CAN CAUSE MULTIPLE HEALTH PROBLEM….suffice to say that hypothyroidism can cause fatigue, general weakness, metabolic disorders, increased risk of heart attacks, brittle nails, thin hair, hair loss, depression, mental problems, muscular problems, risk for fractures and much more. However, don’t just jump into thyroid medications. Keep in mind that low thyroid function might be the result of several anti-thyroid factors like nutrient deficit, iodine deficit, poor intake of zinc and selenium, toxin exposure, excess chemicals in the food, adrenal gland imbalance, poor diet, gut inflammation and dysbiosis. Perhaps you should evaluate and manage these factors as you advance.
Low thyroid function requires proper medical treatment, as I describe in my website. However…
…TREATING LOW THYROID FUNCTION with thyroid medications ( Synthroid, Levothyroxine, Armour Thyroid, Levoxyl, NatureThroid, Cytomel, NP Thyroid, WP Thyroid) must follow the values of TSH, T4 and T3 but may not always be enough to achieve metabolic balance because:
1) If the adrenal glands are distressed (from stress, bad diet, toxins, etc) they may block the thyroid function - therefore adrenal support with some very specific supplements might be needed. If your thyroid is not working well, strongly consider adrenal support before or during thyroid management, (which requires stress management and an adaptogens, as we explain) ( like Adren-AM or Max-Adren). Adaptogens should be taken under professional guidance.
2 If the gut is inflamed with dysbiosis (a toxic-metabolic bowel disorder caused by stress, wrong or bad food, bad fats, etc.) your thyroid function may hurt. A diet adjustment may be very needed - start with our recommended dairy-free, gluten-free, wheat-free, Mediterranean diet. Strongly consider doing our Florida Mediterranean Diet (if you need a copy send me an e-mail or find it in my website). If not improvement, you may need a food sensitive test.
3) If the gut is very inflamed, and you have significant episodes of diarrhea or constipation, or you think your gut has accumulated toxins, then food sensitivity test, our Detox Diet (which we can send you) and a detoxification program are all needed.
4) Help your thyroid achieve better function by taking our Thyroid-Aid, 1-2 capsules with breakfast.
5) If you suspect your adrenal function is compromised (fatigue, poor sleep, muscle aches, lack of energy, etc) then Bio-Thyroid, 1-2 capsules with breakfast might improve adrenal and thyroid gland at same time. (Don’t take both Thyroid-Aid and Bio-Thyroid).
6) On occasions, adopting a diet change (like our Florida Mediterranean diet), adding Detox-Vitamins and improving your adrenals might improve thyroid function.
7) Read the disclaimer section in our website. Consultation with health care professional is a must.
MANY INDIVIDUALS IMPROVED THEIR THYROID FUNCTION by adopting a Mediterranean-style diet, practicing some form of detoxification, and taking 1 0r 2 Medi-Naturals and one Thyroid-Aid or Bio-Thyroid with breakfast, (regular checks of Free T3 and Free T4 are needed).
8) Go slow and be careful. Improving your adrenal function with above supplements and improving your thyroid function with Thyroid-Aid or Bio-Thyroid may actually boost your thyroid too much, specially if you are already taking thyroid medication. This can push you into over-functioning thyroid function or HYPERTHYROIDISM, with adverse cardiovascular and neurological consequences. Check your pulse and blood pressure, watch your body temperature, see your doctor for a thyroid function test (which must include TSH, Total and Free T3 and Free T4) .
9) I end this article repeating and emphasizing the concepts I wrote above. Just because your thyroid test is low it does not mean you must take thyroid medications. Your adrenal-stress, your silently inflamed gut (from your bad food), your toxins load, your lack of nutrients, the chemicals you consume (from foods, drinks and even the cumulative effect of bad vitamins), may all be responsible. Many health care professionals (MD, DO, Naturopathics, and even some chiropractors) can show you the right path.
All the best
