What are the symptoms of mites?

My hamster has fur thinning but not balding. Not sure of cause, I have suspicions of either mites or hormonal imbalance. Could anyone tell me the symptoms of mites? Can you see the mites on the hamsters skin or is it completely invisible? If it is hormonal imbalance are the vets able to cure it? TIA
