Cortison and Hppd

Hi,

I recently posted a question about the use of prednisolone (cortisol) for short term treatment for tinnitus.

I have been reading about cortisol to learn more about its effects on the brain and found this article from 2014:

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-athletes-way/201402/chronic-stress-can-damage-brain-structure-and-connectivity

It talks about the effects of chronic stress on the hippocampus and amygdala. "High level of stress (induced by cortisol) has the ability to flip a switch in stem cells that turns them into a type of cell that inhibits connections to the prefrontal cortex, which would improve learning and memory, but lays down durable scaffolding linked to anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder."

The wrong rewiring of the brain in Hppd could also be partly due to cortisol (the "fight or flight" hormone).

I do not smoke weed, but out of interest I found an article regarding the connection of weed and cortisol. So this might also be a reason why to avoid smoking with Hppd.

There is a lot of research going on regarding Neuroplasticity and the ability of the brain to rewire itself even later in life. So there are potential ways to correct faulty connections. Treatments to reduce too much cortisol and to rewire your brain are: sports, mindfulness training, reducing overall stress and hormonal imbalance etc. (I think this is also commonly mentioned as effective Hppd treatments).
