Postpartum depression seems like a perfectly logical response to having a child.

I've recently had postpartum depression explained to me as a psych major in college. Common causes listed include: hormonal imbalances, significant changes in sleep schedule, and disruption of daily activities as a result of spending time caring for the newborn.

These all. seem like reasonable causes, but one cause that I haven't heard is this: realization of where their life is headed from this point on.

Having a child, however you feel emotionally about it, means committing the next 20 or more years of your life to the maintanence and growth of another human being, one which currently has no capabilities whatsoever. Having a child and raising it means you will never again be young and free. by the time the child is independent, you will be 20 years older, so childbirth marks the end of your time as a free, independent young adult. It's not considered weird that 16 year old humans will get abortions or give their children up for adoption so that they don't have to abandon their personal ambitions.

It seems reasonable to assume that even humans who have been around a bit longer will experience anxiety and depression in the aftermath of making such a commitment.
