Cis Female Question - Can I replace birth control pill used for hormone imbalance with bio identical hormones?
Continually from a young age I have immediately been prescribed birth control for any symptoms of hormone imbalance like irregular painful period, acne, oily skin (skin is dry and flaky despite being extremely oily), excess hair, vaginal dryness and fragility, my face also looks more masculine - I have flat cheeks without much fat. I possibly have PCOS indicated by ultrasound and blood tests. I recently also had damage to my ovaries that has made symptoms worse. My estrogen is within normal range but on the lower end and androgens are highest possible while still being within normal range.
My question is, instead of using synthetic hormones in birth controls that are available here in Canada. Can I not use bioidentical hormones to replace the role birth control would play in "balancing" (I know it would be more like replacing my hormones)? The role of birth control is to mimic the estrogen and progesterone of early pregnancy, why can't I just use bio-identical ones instead to reach those levels since they have far lower risk of adverse side effects especially if they're bio-identical transdermal estradiol or bio-identical micronized progesterone. Why is this not even an option for me and other women, when it seems to be safer, hormone levels show up in blood and risk of blood clot is significantly, if not completely reduced if transdermal estradiol is used.
I asked my doctor and they said it was because they wouldn't be able to monitor the bio identical hormones in my blood - which is false since they're bio identical. She said bio identical hormones are unregulated - again doesn't seem true, and the effects on young women haven't been studied - they are used for young women with POI.
Is what I'm saying possible? To replace the role of synthetic ethinyl estradiol and progestins with the bio identical estradiol and progesterone to manage my symptoms. I hear countless women talking about the negative impact of birth control pill on their health (so sooo many side effects short term and long term) and it has been the case for me as well. Countless doctors hand the BCP out like candy, without further investigation, consultation or followup. I would not be using the hormones for contraception purposes and never have needed it for that purpose when I have been prescribed it in the past - so there's no risk of that.
I'm interested in taking bio identical transdermal estrogen or bio identical oral estradiol combined with bio identical micronized progesterone and/or a hormonal iud (with more localized progestin levonorgestrel) (to keep my uterus healthy). Since I will be taking it longer term it seems worth investigating. I have also heard a knowledgeable menopause doctor criticize the use of ethinyl estradiol and progestin when the bioidentical equivalent is better even for younger women. Two birth controls Natazia (has estradiol valerate) and Zoely (has estradiol) - unfortunately neither are available where I live and show that it should be fine to replace with bio identical.
Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated?
