Second appointment with a Functional Medicine Doctor

Hi community👋

This is an update post regarding the functional medicine doctor visit that I had about a month ago (This post is about the first appointment). I just received all the results and directions on how to improve my health.

Here is the summary of the results:

[Blood test resuls]

- High Total Testosterone but DHEA-S and Androgen are in the reference range

- Low progesterone but Estradiol is in the reference range

- Thyroid panel shows that I have Hyperthyroidism (I've been on medication due to Grave's disease for about 6 months) but T3 and T4 are finally in range but TSH is still under 0.01 mlU/L. This is the best result since I was diagnosed with Graves.

- I have thick blood.

- I don't have insulin resistance 👍

[Stool test results + Micro nutrient]

- My gut has dysbiosis (high need for support), maldigestion (moderate need for support), and infection (optional need for support) which means I have a leaky gut.

- My body is deficient or on a borderline on B-complex Vitamins(B6, B12, Folate) + some Amino Acids(Serine, Glutamine, Asparagine, Choline, Oleic Acid) + Other Vitamins and Minerals(Vitamin D, Vitamin K12, Copper) + Individual Antioxidants (Coenzyme Q10). My gut is missing some enzymes to digest proteins and cannot absorb some vitamins and minerals.

- My gut doesn't have inflammation or metabolic imbalance 👍

- There are no parasites in my gut 👍

Meds and supplements I should start taking:

[Prescription meds]

- 25mg troches/day of bioidentical progesterone to bring my period back (No more synthetic progestins). Hopefully, I ovulate with this and my cycle will be regulated. FYI, this is called bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT).

- 1.5mg/day of Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) to improve the thyroid immune system. (start with 0.5mg the increase by 0.5mg every 10 days)

[Supplements]

- 160mg/day of Saw Palmetto to reduce Testosterone

- 5,000 IU/day Vitamin D - after the meal

[Supplements to fix leaky gut]

- 1 capsule/meal of Digestzymes

- 1 capsule/day of Orthobiotic to add good bacteria to my gut

- 1 capsule/day of vitamin B complex

- 1 capsule/day of vitamin B12

- 500mg/day of Berberine

- 60mg/day of oil of oregano

Things I should continue and stop:

- Stay on a low-inflammatory diet

- Avoid dairy 😭

- Continue taking the same amount of supplements and the meds that I'm currently on, which are 4:`1 Myo-inositol and D-chiro inositol, Magnesium Glycinate, PTU. We will adjust the amount of intake by monitoring the blood test results in a few months if we need.

- Eat more kinds of fish not only salmon and tuna to reduce the risk of high mercury intake.

- Drink more water throughout the day. This might make my thick blood better.

It looks like I need to take a bunch of meds and supplements, but once my gut situation improves, I can stop taking those supplements. The goal of fixing a leaky gut is to make my gut healthy enough to be able to digest proteins properly and my body can absorb all the nutrition out of food. My functional med doctor told me that leaky gut and the inflammatory gut are one of the things that PCOSers should address and improve. By the way, I just finished reading "8 steps to reverse your PCOS" by Dr. Fiona McCulloch, N.D. and she also talks about addressing information including leaky gut in Step 1!

Not only a leaky gut, but I also could know that I have an excess of ovarian androgen, not an excess of adrenal androgen. It's great to articulate my PCOS situation.

The post became really long, but hopefully, BHRT works well on me and gut health improves. I'll keep updated!
