T Gel?

I was told to reach out here because I’d like to hear some advice from other trans men who’ve transitioned or are currently transitioning. My friend has a very limited amount of information about hormones and how gel works but I was wondering if I were to purchase testosterone gel from my local drug store and started using it would it actually work or would I have hormone imbalances and need to see the doctor? I looked up what would happen if a woman used testosterone gel and it all sounded like results I desire but ovarian cysts and type 2 diabetes popped up and got a little concerned. I don’t want to risk anything either. My friend also told me that most hormone gels don’t work either (she only said estrogen doesn’t work, she doesn’t know much about testosterone so she only assumed).
